Chaumont en Charolais castle

In the heart of a magnificent romantic park

Discover one of the largest private stables in France, a masterpiece of 17th-century equestrian architecture with Italian inspiration. Built for the grandson of King Charles IX by his wife, Henriette de Laguiche, Duchess of Angoulême, the stables feature a remarkable three-aisled layout with groin vaults designed to house two rows of horses. The design is said to be inspired by a project by Leonardo da Vinci.

According to legend, only the King of France could own stables housing 100 horses — the stables at Chaumont held 99…
But the hundredth horse was the one on the equestrian statue of Philibert de Laguiche, placed above the main entrance gate!
Fully accessible to people with reduced mobility.
