Semur-en-Brionnais castle

Built from the tenth century, the Château Saint-Hugues is characteristic of medieval military architecture:

Round towers of defense, arrow slits, dungeons, narrow stairs. It retains its square Roman tower, the oldest of Burgundy. The castle was the family residence of the Lords of Semur. Saint Hugh, Grand Abbot of Cluny descended from this family. The dukes of Burgundy strengthened the fortifications of the castle in the fourteenth century.

In the fifteenth century, when the village returned to the crown of France, the towers became bailiwick prisons, then revolutionary. Near of the castle are situated the Romanesque church of Saint-Hilaire, the salt cellar (XVIIth c.) or the audience of Justice (XVIIIth c). To value this rich heritage, events are offered throughout the year.
